Katahdin is the highest mountain in Maine. Norther Terminus of the Appalachian Trail.
Called Katahdin by people local to the peak and by the Penobscot Indians: the term means "The Greatest Mountain". It is located in east central Piscataquis County about 25 miles (40 km) northwest of Millinocket. It divides the East and West Branches of the Penobscot River and is the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. From the low lake country to the south and east, the mountain appears to be one of the tallest and most abrupt in the Appalachian Mountains.

Entering a sheer rock-walled corridor, you explode through Exterminator hole and then run the Staircase, a tough Class V rapid. Next you'll raft the Cribworks, a Class V boulder-choked, serpentine rapid. Downriver, you'll continue through chutes and dramatic drops which are intermingled with peaceful stretches of calm water. You'll also cascade wildly over a riverwide waterfall. And since our rafting trips are smaller and slow-paced, we're often able to surf the Falls and stop at the natural waterslide. The Penobscot River runs along the border of Baxter State Park in full view of Mt. Katahdin. The scenery alone is worth the trip. All full day Penobscsot River rafting trips include a hearty BBQ lunch featuring chicken, fish or steak with side dishes of rice, salad and a cold drink. Penobscot River, Class 4 & 5, White Water Rafting
Set amongst the spectacular backdrop of Maine's highest mountain, Mt. Katahdin, the West Branch of the Penobscot River features internationally known heart pumping whitewater for the truly adventurous paddler.
For the ultimate whitewater rafting adventure, we will do the Double Dip trip:
We'll raft the technical Class IV-V rapids twice. This trip is only for the athletic, physically fit and adventurous whitewater rafter.
Intermediate to Advanced+. Minimum age 14. Previous experience recommended but not necessary.
A 1-day Penobscot River trip meets around 8:00 a.m. In the morning, rafters meet the guides, sign a general release, and grab a lifejacket and paddle. In cooler weather, wetsuits can be rented that morning for $7-15; a bathing suit, shorts and sneakers are fine on warmer days. After listening to a safety talk, rafters are shuttled to the river put-in. During the rafting trip, we stop for a snack (if the water and weather permit). Ideally, we break at a waterfall or swimming hole. After rafting, we feast on a hearty chicken, steak or salmon BBQ lunch (vegetarians accommodated with advance notice). The day ends around 5:00 with a picture show of you rafting the big rapids all day.
